When bone marrow cells go through the cell cycle, the two identical daughter cells that result from mitosis have very different functions. Following G1, one daughter cell leaves the cell cycle and becomes a specialized blood cell. The second daughter cell remains in the marrow as a stem cell and repeats the cell cycle. DNA determines the fate of each cell.
DNA is the basic genetic unit for each cell and contains information about the fate of the cell. The DNA of daughter cell which remains in stem cell state and continues to divide causes production of those substances which promote it to stay in stem cell state and also promote its continuous division. On the other hand, the DNA of specialized cell causes production of substances which changes characteristics of the cell and causes it to become a mature and specialized cell.
