The equation to represent the given reaction is:

C12H26 + Heat → C8H18 + C4H8

- The formula of octane is C8H18.

- During thermal decomposition of C12H26, no other products are formed other than C8H18 and an alkene.

- So, the no of carbon atoms in alkene = 12 -8 = 4

- And the no of hydrogen atoms in alkene = 26-18 = 8

- So, the alkene formed is Butene (C4H8).
