We can see them both in the nucleus but chromosomes are only visible during cell division

Yes, during cell division, the structure of the chromatin and chromosomes are visible under a light microscope.
But, during interphase, chromosomes are somewhat less condensed and are not visible as individual objects under the light microscope. However during cell division, mitosis, the chromosomes become highly condensed and are then visible as dark distinct bodies within the nuclei of cells.
