The atoms of carbon and oxygen do a transfer of electrons and thus forming a bond, which results in lower energy of the carbon and oxygen atoms in combined state. Both the elements form a bond and lose energy and get stabilised.

carbon and oxygen both are elements. In the CO2 molecule there are two atoms of oxygen and one atom of carbon.
