When carbon dioxide gas is passed in lime water it turns milky due to the formation of Calicum carbonate. Calicum carbonate is a white precipitate ( precipitate are insoluble substance forms during a chemical reaction )
Reaction:-
Ca(H2O)2 + CO2 ---> CaCO3 + H2O
