Brine is a solution of sodium chloride ( NaCl ) and water ( H2O ) . When sodium hydroxide and chlorine are allowed to mix , the reaction goes as below :
Cl2 ( aq ) + 2 OH - ( aq ) < =========> OCl- ( aq ) + Cl- ( aq ) + H2O ( l )
Sodium hyprochloride is produced from the above reaction .
Uses of Sodium Hyprochlorite :
1) It is an active ingredient in bleaching powder .
2) It is used as disinfectant .
3) It is used in cleaning water .
