When salt is dissolved in water, as it is in ocean water, that dissolved salt adds to the mass of the water and makes the water denser than it would be without salt

There is a property of matter that particles of matter have spaces between them.
When NaCl is dissolved in water, it occupies some of the spaces between the particles of matter thus, making the solution denser.
