When comparing a spoonful of salad dressing to a cell, what would the liquid be equivalent to?

Without a doubt in my mind, I would say the cytoplasm. In sixth grade (last year) we studied the cell structure for a while. The cytoplasm protects and coats the cell, similar to the dressing on a salad- if you have ever tried this, other less oily dressings (like ranch) do not intercept the salad itself because the dressing protects it. Similarly, the cytoplasm blocks external forces from entering the cell and, essentially, infecting it.
