During the French revolution, when the conservative regimes were restored to power many liberal-minded people went underground due to the fear of beheading or severe punishments of lifetime imprisonments. This ended the secularism in the state and liberal ideas were thought to be radial and whoever had them was treated like an arsonist. The liberals wanted the freedom of expression which the French had lost at one point.
