When the data is transferred on the internet, it is broken down into bits of small sized pieces called packets and these are again reassembled to original data.
A packet can be characterized as the simplest unit of communication over a digital network. A packet is called by several names which depends on the protocol used for the transmitting the data.
Structure of the data packet:
The structure of the data packet depends on the protocol and type of packet. A packet generally contains a header and payload. The function of the header is to keep information about the service, packet and other data which is related to transmission. For example the data which is transferred over the internet requires the breaking of data into IP packets.
IP packet includes the following:
1. Source IP address
2. Destination IP address
3. The sequence number of packets
4. Technical data
Packets and protocols: The functionality and structure of the packets depend on the protocols that implements them. Through the nodes which are device and routers, IP packet travels over the internet.
