Aurangzeb re-imposed Jizya tax upon Hindus on 2nd April 1679.
Explanation: Emperor Akbar had abolished Jizya tax in 1564. But Aurangzeb imposed this tax again which mainly had to be paid by poor Hindus. It became a source of revenue for the rulers. Aurangzeb’s plan was to strengthen Islam and weaken Hinduism. Jizya payment was to be paid in silver coins. Hindu artisans, cloth merchants and money lenders protested against this tax but were crushed by elephants.
