Bholi was always ill treated by her parents, but on the first day of school she was given new clothes. New clothes had never been made for Bholi. It was usually passed on from her sisters. No one cared to wash or mend her clothes. However, this time she was lucky to receive a clean dress which had shrunk after many washes and no longer fitted Champa. She was even bathed and oil was rubbed on her dry and matted hair. Only after all this she was convinced that she was being taken to a place better then her own home.
