Bismillah Khan was a famous ‘shehnai vadak’ from India, who gave the shehnai music great heights.
He was born on 21 March 1916 in a Muslim family in Dumraogaon, Bihar. His father's name was 'Pagambar Khan' and mother's name was 'Mithnabai'.
His father and grandfather were all shehnai players. Bismillah Khan moved from Bihar to Banaras at the age of 6 and settled here. He got married in Banaras itself. In Banaras, he learned the shehnai from his maternal uncle 'Alibakhsh' and played the shehnai throughout his life. Bismillah Khan was a symbol of Indian shared culture and brotherhood. Despite being a Muslim, he used to play the shehnai in the Vishwanath temple in Varanasi. He died on 21 August 2006.
