The UK became a member of the EU (then known as the European Economic Community) in 1973 under the Prime Ministership of Edward Heath. There was no veto on its membership though a referendum was held in 1975 to gauge support for its continued membership of the EEC. 67% voted in favour on a 65% turnout.
