To form a rainbow there are 3 main phenomena in the rain droplet:
Refraction
Dispersion
Total Internal Reflection -When a light ray passes from a denser medium to a rarer medium. If it strikes the boundary of separation of the 2 media at an angle greater than the critical angle, the ray instead of refracting, reflects internally.
*Critical angle is the angle made by the incident ray and the normal for which the refracted ray is 90o.

When a ray of light passes through prism it disperse into seven different colours. This phenomenon is known as Dispersion Of Light.
During/after rain the tiny droplets of rain act as a prism and disperse the sun rays and form a rainbow. the light rays travel straight but the rainbow appears curved because of earth's round shape.
