Gandhiji take up the "Khilafat Issue" because he wanted to make the movement broad-based. It was only possible when Muslims and Hindus community were become close together. One way of doing this, he felt, was to take up the Khilafat Issue. It was began with the defeating of Ottoman Emperorthe spiritual head of the Islamic World (the Khalifa). To defend the temporal powers of Khalifa, a committee was formed and was discussing with Gandhiji about the possibility of united mass action on the issue. This saw the opportunity for Hindus and Muslims made the people under the unified national movement. At the Calcutta Session Congress in September 1920, he convinced other leaders of the need to start a non~cooperation movement in support of Khilafat as well as for swaraj
