Louis XIV of the Bourbon family of Kings ascended the throne of France in 1774. When he inherited the throne the treasury was empty. The prolonged war had taken it's toll on the financial resources. The social burdens caused by the war included the huge war debt, made worse by the monarchy's military failures and ineptitude, and the lack of social services for war veterans.
