That is an interesting question that many people have never given any thought to. If you go back in time (not so long ago) to say the late 1800’s and early 1900’s this was an absolute must. If you went out in public to shop or go to a restaurant and many other places without being dressed properly not only would people look at you like you had a 3rd eye but, you also might be escorted out of the establishment.
One writer wrote he thought it had to do with comfort. I do not agree. I recall in the 70’s to 80’s is when you started seeing people (including myself) pop into a grocery store with a sweat suit or gym shorts and a tank top on. I remember when I started doing this and was a little worried I would be very much out of place. But, when I realized that I was just going in a grocery store and not going to a wedding and no one seemed to care I was all in. It became a regular thing to go in certain places just looking however you wanted.
