It is always difficult to put a date for the start of medieval or modern era, because these are named not for marking a particular event but to indicate the change in the trend in all aspects (political, social and economical etc)
In India’s case, the start of modern era are with these changes.
Political: Imperialism(Small traditional states) to Colonialism.
Social: From a orthodox society based on blind superstitious beliefs to westernization of ideas, belief and understanding(Social Reform Movement) .
Economic: From being a independent economy to becoming a subordinate of British economy.
The period which saw these trends was the start of Modern era.
