when did you move into the neighborhood?
Answers
Once upon it was tradition for neighbors to stop by when a new person had moved into the neighborhood and introduce themselves. They often brought a pie or a cake or something like that. I still do this but I am a dinosaur. When my parents purchased my current home in 1964, my mother was surprised that no one stopped by. Because I was a kid, I got to meet the other little girl (she was five) that lived on the street and my sister eventually met the kids her age. My parents developed some friendships with a few of the people on the street, but it was very hit and miss. A friend lives in a neighborhood filled with kids. She has the perfect tree in her front yard and, during the time her nieces and nephew were visiting her, on any given day, there would be anywhere from two to five bicycles ‘parked’ in her front yard as some of the kids played soccer in the street and other climbed the tree. Through this, she did get to know some of the parents well enough that her nieces had sleep overs with their friends and vice versa. Children seem to be the binding force in many neighborhoods. The grownups stay cloistered in our climate controlled shells until some strange child shows up in your house and your kid introduces you to the neighbor’s kid.
