chromosome appear in a cell when cells are ready to divide. the chromatic condenses to form thicker, thread like structure called chromosome. chromosomes are the structures responsible for the inheritance of characters (genes) from one generation to another.

Each chromosome at that time consists of two identical strands called chromatids, joined at a point called the centromere. In the prophase of mitosis and meiosis, the chromosomes coil and condense, becoming thick enough to be visible to the light microscope, and that’s when their double-stranded structure becomes apparent. After division, they remain single-stranded until the next S (synthesis) phase of the cell cycle, when the cell is preparing to divide again.
