It depends on whether you are posted in Secretariat (Delhi / State Capital) or in the District.
In Secretariat it’s like private sector job where the ~10–6 is the normal working hours and you get 2 days off in a week.
However, the situation is totally different when you are posted in a district and serving as District Collector or SP. Generally the office is open 6 days a week and there is no fixed working hours as you are expected to be on duty 24x7.
For instance, in last 2 months (August - September 2016) the District Magistrate of Bhagalpur, Bihar (where I am currently posted) has not got any leave (not even Sunday !) because of the following reasons.
We had to organize one of the largest fair i.e Shravani Mela in the month of July and August. Then we had district bearing the wrath of Ganges river. It was one of the worst floods ever. During that time you could find DM and SDM touring the affected areas even at 2 AM in the night. Then honourable CM visited the district thrice and organizing such visit is quite a challenge in itself. After the floods, comes the festive season and guess what the entire administration is having sleepless nights in preventing any law and order situation. So leaves of all officials have been cancelled till Diwali
HOPE IT IS HELPFUL
