Q. When do I Use a Colon (:) And, When Do I use a Semi-Colon (;). or, Can I use them interchangingly?? What is the Difference Between These Two??

Answer :-

Uses of colon :-

Colons, symbolized as ":" are used to introduce a list of something, a quotation, in simple words they are used to join two clauses.

Uses of Semi-Colons :-

Semi colons, symbolized as ";" are used to join to independent clause, which means each part of the sentence i.e. before the Semi-Colon and after the semi-colon make complete sense.

Let us understand it through examples!

1. John Keats had said : "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

↬ Here we observe that after the colon a new quotation has been introduced.

2. I want an ice cream ; I like to have ice cream in summer.

↬ Here we observe that the part before and after the semi-colon i.e. "I want an ice cream" and "I like to have ice cream in summer" respectively, make complete sense.

Secondly, we have observed that semi-colon and colon have different uses, therefore they can't be used interchangingly.
