total surface is used
when all the area need to cover a object is needed
for example
if a sphere of radius 5 cm is to painted then
total surface area has to be calculated
so that according to total surface the amount of paint can be used
curved / lateral surface area is used
when only curved portion of an object has to be covered
for example
if a pillar in a form of cylinder of radius 5 cm and height is to painted then for example
lateral surface area has to be calculated
as top area is holding the building
and bottom area is covered by pillar it self

vishakha: thanks... :)
