CONCEPT AND ANSWER

For maximum height you need 90 degree throw. This will give only a vertical component due to which all force acts in the direction of motion reaching maximum distance.

For maximum distance on the other hand is not 180 or 0 degree throw . Though you have only horizontal component of force , the projectile will come into act with frictional force of ground.

So we need both horizontal and vertical component, this will be attained by 45 degree option with which we get maximum range as the projectile does not come in frictional play and yet travels a distance.
