Explanation:

When ethane burn in excess of O2 then it produce heat and Co2.

therefore the oxidation number of carbon in ethane is.

c2h6=2x+6=0

2x=-6

x=-3.

and the oxidation number of carbon in CO2 is.

2x-4=0

2x=4

x=2.

hence when ethane burn in excess of oxygen then it's oxidation number change from -3 to 2.
