When few drops of phenolphthalein are added to a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide a pink colour is produced.

What will be the colour of the final mixture when excess of HCl is added to it? (justify your answer)

When phenolphthalein is added to dil. NaOH ,the solution turns into pink colour . So, when HCl is added to that solution, It will turn the solution into colourless solution . This is because, HCl neutralises the NaOH and produces salt. Also, as the solution is now neutralised, phnolphthalein will be colourless. Also, following reaction can referred ::-


HCl (aq) + NaOH (aq) -------> NaCl (s) + H₂O (l)
