This process is done in titration also known as concentration(sodium hydroxide) is a base, phenophthalein is added and the base turns pink in colour. After titrating out the base by any acid ( drop by drop from the burette) the base gets colourless again.Titration should be in very cautious way, a single drop difference could spoil your whole experiment

Answer:

When few drops of phenolphthalein are added to dilute a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide a pink colour. The colour of dilute solution of Sodium hydroxide turns pink or adding Phenolphthalein as  NaOH is a base .When excess of HCl is added the final mixture becomes colourless due to  neutralisation of base with an acid.
