Austrian chancellor Duke Metternich once remarked,
"When France sneezes, the rest of the Europe catches cold"
He said in the context that when French Revolution started, the ideas of the French Revolution spread to whole of the Europe. The ideas of nationalism and liberalism were originated from the French Revolution. The French revolutionaries declared that it was the mission and the destiny of the French nation to help other parts of the Europe to become nations.
After the defeat of Napoleon, when conservatives gained power, they made France lose the territories it had annexed. Also, the Bourbon dynasty was restored to power in France once again. But, in July 1830, during July revolution, the bourbon dynasty was overthrown once again by liberal revolutionaries and a constitutional monarchy was established. It was due to the July revolution that sparked an uprising in Brussels leading to breaking away of Belgium from the United Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Since, the spread of nationalism and liberalism has its roots in France, Metternich said, "When France sneezes, the rest of the Europe catches cold".
