When George Washington was a little boy, he got an axe as present from his father. He was very glad to get the axe. With a joyful heart he went to his father's garden. He liked to see how sharp the axe was. He began to try the axe on his father's favourite cherry tree. Soon the fine cheery tree lay on the ground. In the afternoon George's father saw this. He became very angry. He cried out, "George! Who has done this?" George was a very truthful boy. He said, "Father, I can't tell a lie. I have done it." His father was very sorry for the loss of his favourite cherry tree. But he was glad that his son had told the truth. Later in life George became the first President of the United States of America.
