When H_2O_2 is treated with a solution of titanium dioxide in presence of conc. H_2SO_4, Pertitanic acid is formed in which Ti has an oxidation number of +4.

  • When H_2O_2 reacts with TiO_2 (titanium oxide) it gives H_2TiO_4 (Pertitanic acid). This compound is orange in color.
  • We can easily find the oxidation number of the compound by looking at the structure of the acid.
  • In this acid, 2 OH are bonded to Ti, and also an O-O (peroxide) is boned with Ti. So, if we let the oxidation number of Ti be x

        x + 2(-1) + 2 (-2) + 2 (+1) = 0

     ⇒ x = +4

Hence, we can conclude that the oxidation number of the metal of the compound is +4.
