We know that metals, which are more reactive than hydrogen react with dilute acids to form metal salt and hydrogen gas.

Metal + dilute acid → Metal salt + hydrogen gas

When dilute hydrochloric acid is added to zinc metal, then zinc being more reactive than hydrogen will displace H2 gas from the acid, forming zinc chloride in the process. Following is the chemical equation for the reaction

 Zn (s) + 2HCl (aq) → ZnCl2 (aq) + H2 (↑)

Zinc metal has silver-gray appearance. When dilute HCl is added to the metal, the zinc chloride so formed (which is white in colour) will dissolve in the aqueous medium and so the solution obtained will be colourless.
