The reaction of secondary amines or primary amines with chloroform is known as carbylamine reaction .

It produces foul smell due to formation of isocyanides

It other name is the hofmann isocyanide synthesis ,

It gives tetra butylamine if the reaction hapens without a catalyst but if the catalyst is present then we have benzyltriethylamminium chloride
