When you turn an alarm off and don't remember doing so and instead carry on sleeping, did you do it in your sleep or wake up and just not remember?

When a person is actually sleeping, they may experience involuntary movement.

But in order to carry out a complex goal-oriented task, like turning an alarm off, I would assume a person has to be awake.

What most likely happened is that out of habit (meaning if you’ve done the task repeatedly to a stimulus, your brain learns to do that automatically to that stimulus (stimulus = when alarm goes off)) you turn off the alarm.

Because you have that habit, you can do so with less arousal, or wakefulness.

If the alarm was placed far away, then you would have to completely wake yourself up.

So in my opinion, you were awake enough to turn off the alarm…

I suppose sleepiness and wakefulness isn’t as simple as “on” or “off”.

How awake a person is, is kind of like an analogue measurement. Meaning that you can have varying levels of wakefulness......
