This quotation is from Arthur Conan Doyle’s third novel titled The Hound of the Baskervilles. This compliment by Sherlock Holmes underlies the unusual connection between him and Watson. Holmes appreciates driving Watson on, giving him a chance to think he has the correct answer, when in real the detective himself is holding every one of the cards. Watson, also, substitutes the readers as Holmes' little consolation entices us to attempt our hand at detection also, regardless of whether we will never be as great at solving secrets as Sherlock Holmes.
