when hot iron nail is kept in cold , the temperature of iron is reduced where as temperature of water is increased, why?

This is done to establish an equilibrium with its environment so that the nail and the water together would have the same temperature. The hot nail's temperature reduces and the cold water's temperature increases until an equilibrium is established.
