Hydrogen ions in water combine with the water molecules to form hydronium ions, thereby decreasing the pH and increasing the acidity of water. ... To answer your question, acid added to water increases the hydrogen ion concentration (H+), decreases the pH, and increases the acidity. The concentration of hydronium ions decreases when an acid is diluted because on adding water the H+ ions of the acid and hydroxyl ions of water react to form water molecules and the concentration of hydronium ions decreases.

HCL have breaks into free ions of h + and CL - when dissolved in water and forms h3o + corresponding anion this increases the pH of the water. the h + ion joins with a water molecule and forms h3o + this free electronic and electrical charge from one place to another hence conduct electricity

note that dry HCL gas does not contain h + Ion or h3o + ions soite not show any acidic property
