       H2  +  CuO  = Cu  +  H2O

Here oxidation and reduction occurs simultaneously because after reaction the oxidation state of Cu changes from +1 to 0 which indicates reduction and the oxidation state of H2 changes from 0 to +1 which indicates reduction. Hence the sentence is right.
