When India got independence in 1947, the widespread nature of illiteracy and poverty were of the most important issues facing the new government. Literacy rate in India has grown to 74% (2011 figure) from 12% at the end of the British rule in 1947. What vital role did the government of India play to raise the levels of literacy rate in our country?
