See basically when you place an iron piece in a magnetic field, the iron piece itself becomes a temporary magnet ( can be made permanent ) i.e. if your magnet has north pole facing the iron piece then the part of the iron piece facing towards the magnet acquires south pole and another end of the north pole.

In the microscopic level, ferromagnets have regions called as domains. These domains have tiny bar magnets (dipoles) that get aligned in a particular fashion under the Influence of external magnetic fields.
