When is a parallel combination of resistances used? A wire of 8ohm/m is turned in the form of a circle of diameter 3m. Find the resistance across the ends of the diameter.​

1. When we want all the electrical appliances work under the same potential difference.

2. When we want the total resistance of the circuit to be less than the individual resistors used in that given circuit.

3. When we want each appliances to draw their own current depending on their power consumption.

4. If one component of the circuit breaks down, the circuit will not break.

Generally parallel combination is used in domestic circuits.

When an 8 ohms of resistance is turned in the form of circle then the resistance of the part of the wire above and below the diameter of the circle is 4 ohms.

Since thus is a parallel combination

Therefore,

Effective resistance across the diameter = 1/(1/4+1/4)

= 2 ohms
