When it comes to planning and aligning multiple Agile Release Trains, a pre-planning session is held. It helps in aligning all the tasks and the work that needs to be done before diving into the Program Increment Planning session. Although nothing is etched in stone when it comes to pre planning. But it is a healthy exercise in creating realistic approaches towards achieving the goals in a Program Increment.

Answer:

When better coordination between ARTs is required.

Explanation:

In the Scaled Agile execution, there could be a situation when multiple ARTs - Agile Release Trains - are going to work on same solution. It needs even more collaboration among the ARTs in such cases.

A pre-PI planning event is suggested, whereby the dependencies between these ARTs are discussed in advance to actually starting the PI planning. This complements the PI planning event.
