When is a solution said to be saturated? How can you change an unsaturated solution to a saturated solution without adding anymore solvent to it?

Answer:

If a solution cannot dissolve any more solute, it is called a saturated solution at that given temperature.

When a saturated solution is heated, the quantity of solvent decreases and hence it becomes an unsaturated solution.

A solution said to be saturated if it cannot dissolve any more solute.

The solute has occupied all the vacant spaces in the solvent available and thus remain undissolved.

An unsaturated solution can be converted to saturated solution by:

  • heating the mixture so that some of solvent evaporates and volume decreases.

  • This would reduce the empty spaces available for solute to dissolve and thus become saturated.

  • The solute particles which were previously in dissolve state forms crystals once the solution become saturated.
