since we're going up, and the gravity's down, g is negative. when we come down in the same direction as that of g-force, g is positive

If you take g as positive because the velocity is along g, just take all the vectors facing down as positive and all facing up as negative.

If you take g as negative because g is in the "downward direction" just take all the vectors facing up as positive and all facing down as negative.
