If the subject consists of two or more words that are connected by *and* or by *both...and*, the subject is plural and requires a plural verb.Ex.:  Ms. Smith and Mr. Jones have received awards.Ex.:  Both the collection and the delivery of mail are to be cut back as of July 1. (The repetition of the with the second subject emphasizes that two different items are meant.) ---------------Use a singular verb when two or more subjects connected by *and* refer to the same person or thing. Ex.:  The movie's writer and director is Jane Doe. (One person.) Ex.:  Liver and onions was his favorite dish. (One dish.)
