When is the work done positive or negative while moving a small charge?

ANSWER :

The work done moving a small charge will be positive when the charge is moved in the direction of force.

The work done moving a small charge will be negative when the charge is moved in a direction opposite to that of the force.

EXPLANATION :

The above answer can be explained by using the formula of work .

Work = Force × displacement × cos θ .

When the force is applied and displacement is in opposite direction , work done becomes :

Work = Force × displacement × cos 180°

⇒ Work = Force × displacement × ( - 1 )

Hence we get negative work .

For the other case , the work done is F S cos 0° where cos 0° is 1 and hence the work done is positive .
