Great question! Yes, I probably will have said more than I’ve done. I don’t have as much of a burning desire to do things, so much as to say what I need to say. I believe that the best legacy I can leave behind is the lives that I touch, which for me at least, means saying more.
That being said, I recognize that I say a lot. In my family, my nickname is Lucy, not because I’m the type most likely to yank a football away just as you’re about to kick it, but because for those I love, nickel or no, the (lay) doctor is always in. I love to help people with their problems, which means listening, but also saying more than I actually do.
I also say a ton in written form. In addition to the articles I write for my job, I journal like mad, write letters to those that I care about, and even have some poorly written poetry floating around out there somewhere (that can stay lost…please).
I’ve had more regrets about things I haven’t said than things that I’ve done or left undone (I tend to weigh my words very carefully, so I don’t have as many issues about words I’ve spoken). When I look back, the things that I would do over almost always involve words: making that phone call before that person’s surgery, saying that last “love you,” comforting that person who looks sad, speaking up for someone who needs it, and not saying the words of comfort someone craves.
Regardless, I hope that what I’ve said and done—whatever the balance of that is—reflects a good life.
