Velds are open, uncultivated country or grassland in South Africa. The word 'veld' finds its origin in Afrikaans, the language spoken by the Afrikaners, who are descendants of the Dutch and Huguenot people, who settled in southern Africa in the seventeenth century. In English, the literal translation of veld would be 'field'.
Prairies are large, mostly flat stretches of land in North America, generally treeless tracts of land in the Mississippi valley, originally covered with coarse grasses and very fertile in nature.
When it is summer in the velds, i.e. from mid-October to mid-February, it is winter in the prairies.
