Given:

When Jeremy made 8 black and white copies and 2 colour copies at a copy shop, the cost was $1.20.

When he made 10 black and white copies and 10 colour copies, the cost was $3.00.

To find:

How much do black and white copies cost?

Solution:

Let,

"x" → represents the cost of each black and white copy

"y" → represents the cost of each colour copy

So,

Equation1 ⇔ 8x + 2y = 1.20

Equation2 ⇔ 10x + 10y = 3.00

On multiplying equation1 by 10, we get

80x + 20y = 12 ↔ Equation3

On multiplying equation2 by 2, we get

20x + 20y = 6 ↔ Equation4

On subtracting equation3 and equation4, we get

80x + 20y = 12

20x + 20y = 6

-      -            -

----------------------

60x = 6

--------------------

∴ x = \frac{6}{60} = 0.1

Thus, the cost of each black and white copy is → $ 0.10.
