If we are balancing an equation, the reactants' mass must be equal to the products' mass.

Here In the product side, there's only 1 atom of Mg in Mg(NO3)2.

Hence the coefficient of Mg in the reactants' side is 1.

In HNO3, there are 2 atoms of H2 in watwr as shown in the product's side. There are also 2 atoms of nitrogen in N2O

Hence it is 2.

The equation would be,

Mg+ 2HNO3 → Mg(NO3)2

.
